Turkish Coast Guard rescues 12 migrants in Aegean Sea; irregular migration operations continue

On 2 May, the Turkish Coast Guard rescued 12 irregular migrants attempting to cross to Europe after their boat went adrift in the Aegean Sea, reported Anadolu Agency. During the journey, off the Mugla province’s Aegean coast, one of the migrants drowned. On the same day, around 50 irregular migrants entered Turkey illegally – from Afghanistan and Pakistan – and were held in the eastern Van province. Gendarmerie forces held other 221 irregular migrants who entered Turkey illegally in the same province and arrested three alleged human traffickers. In the southern Hatay province, border forces held 85 migrants crossing illegally from Syria and arrested two people for alleged human smuggling. All the migrants were later referred to provincial migration directorates.
