The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia beheaded 37 citizens, with one crucified after death for terrorism-related offenses, including adopting “extremist, terrorist ideology” insisted authorities. Among the executed, 33 were of Shia minority community. The official Saudi Press Agency (SAP) announced the executions and said the men were killed for “forming terrorist cells to corrupt and disturb security, spread chaos and cause sectarian discord.” Some of the men were accused of “cooperating with hostile parties in a way that damaged the high interests of the homeland.” Others were said to have been involved in bomb attacks on security headquarters that killed Saudi officials, read Middle East Monitor. The executions were carried out in various locations around the kingdom including Riyadh, Makkah and Madinah, and the Eastern Province where most Shia minority members reside. Human rights organization Reprieve denounced the execution as a “flagrant violation of international law, which prohibits sentencing juveniles to death.” The EU issued a statement where it condemned the use of capital punishment, said the executions “raised serious doubts about the respect of the right to fair trial” and stressed that “the execution of people who were minor at the time of the alleged charges constitutes a further serious violation.”
