LAS, GCC and OIC meetings in Mecca

On 30 and 31 May in Saudi cities of Mecca and Jeddah several meetings between Arab countries tool place to discuss about the current situation in the Gulf and in the Region. The Arab League Council celebrated its meeting in the presence of LAS Secretary General Aboul Gheit and several heads of states and governments. The situation in Yemen, Libya and Jerusalem were some of the issues in the agenda. The Gulf Cooperation Council held an emergency meeting in the presence of SG Abdullatif Al-Zayani to discuss the recent drone strikes on oil installation in Saudi Arabia and vessels off the coast of the UAE. Both organisations (LAS and GCC) accused Iran to be responsible of the hostile actions. SG Gheit asked Iran to “reconsider its role in the region”. Also the 14th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) took place in Mecca during the same days, attended by OIC Secretary General Yusuf Al-Othaimeen. The final declaration directly endorses Hadi, the “legitimate” president of Yemen and asks Libyan factions to return to political negotiations.
