Haftar’s offensive urges a total “wipe out” of military opposition; UN calls for a truce

Khalifa Haftar urged his troops to inflict “an even harder” lesson on forces loyal to the country’s internationally recognized government (GNA, Government of National Accord), reported France 24. “Officers and soldiers of our armed forces and affiliates, I greet you during these glorious days and call on you to inflict on the enemy, with your force and determination, an even harder and bigger lesson than before”, he wrote in a message read out by the Libyan National Army’s spokesman General Ahmad al-Mesmari on Sunday 5 May. GNA’s military forces have kept southern outskirts of the capital under their power. The UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) came just a few hours before calling for “an extendable one-week humanitarian truce starting at four in the morning” on Monday, to mark the beginning of Ramadan and to respect the Human Rights Convention, during which all parties pledge to halt all forms of military operations. On 4 May, the UN also condemned the terrorist attack in the city of Sebha, claimed by the Islamic State in the Levant (Dae’esh) which resulted in a number of Libyan casualties. The attack highlights the fact that terrorist groups exploit every opportunity, including the ongoing fight in Tripoli, to expand their presence in the country.
