EU-Tunisia’s Privileged Partnership deepens provided stability is ensured

Ahead of the EU-Tunisia Association Council held on the 17 May, the EU published its latest report on developments in relations with Tunisia. HR/VP Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, both stated the continued Tunisia’s progress in the transition towards democracy in the last year that could only be viable with an equivalent economic and social progress to ensure its sustainability. Mogherini added that the EU would “remain steadfast in our commitment to the Tunisian people […] in order to help establish lasting democratic rule of law and a safe and prosperous country.” The EU-Tunisia Association Council concluded that the main priorities at the top of their common agenda were: the Youth Partnership, further develop economic and trade relations between both parties, supporting the upcoming elections and the process to consolidate democracy and discussing cooperation in the field of security and the fight against terrorism. However, the intention announced at last year’s Association Council regarding the upgrade of the partnership didn’t materialize in tangibles results. Last year, their joint declaration read indeed that: “Both partners aim to continue strengthening their relations beyond 2020 and have agreed to reflect further on the future vision for the partnership before the next meeting of the Association Council in 2019.” This year, the conclusion of the Association Council stated: “We reiterated our willingness to continue and to deepen our common reflection on the future of EU-Tunisia relations post 2020, in order to explore ways of deepening our partnership and to reflect the singularity of the links that unite us.”
