EU – Iran High Level Political Dialogue

On 26 November, the European External Action Service’s Secretary General, Helga Schmid, and the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, held the fourth meeting of the High Level Political Dialogue, in Brussels, with the presence of the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Stavros Lambrinidis, and the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Gilles De Kerchove. The meeting focused on bilateral issues, such as trade, energy, environment, drug policy, as well as counter-terrorism and regional issues, notably Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon and Afghanistan. In parallel, discussions on human rights were held, as an integral part of EU-Iran political dialogue and as a continuation of similar exchanges held in November last year and in February 2016. The meeting coincides with the third EU-Iran High Level Seminar on International Nuclear Cooperation which focused on aspects of civil nuclear cooperation in line with Annex III of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The seminar was opened by Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete and by Ali Akbar Salehi, Vice-President of Iran and Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI). Cañete said that the EU remained committed to the continued full and effective implementation of the nuclear deal in all its aspects as long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear-related commitments in full. Both the EU and Iran expressed their satisfaction at the progress achieved so far in the areas of nuclear co-operation and governance. They agreed to hold a follow-up high-level seminar to be organised by Iran in 2019.
