Egyptian intelligence chief meets Haftar in Bengasi

On 29 May, the chief of the Egyptian intelligence service General Abbas Kamel visited the commander of the Libyan National Army, Marshall Khalifa Haftar in Bengasi. The meeting, held in the general command headquarters of Haftar’s army, focused on the security situation in Libya and the relations between the two countries. The information office of Haftar’s forces stated that “the meeting comes within the frame of counter-terrorism operations in North Africa, and in the context of joint cooperation with Egypt”. Cairo is one of the countries that supports Haftar’s offensive against Tripoli, as president Sisi declared during the two official visits the Libyan general held in Cairo since the war started. During the visit, Kamel and Haftar also discussed about the Egyptian terrorist Hisham al-Ashmawi, captured by the LNA in Derna and handed over to Egyptian authorities in accordance with the “judicial cooperation agreement signed between the two countries”.
