Algeria’s Army Chief declared to have “no political ambitions”

On 22 May, Algeria’s army chief of staff said he had no political ambitions in response to democracy activists protesting General Ahmed Gaed Salah’s intention to copy the authoritarian model of Egypt, read Reuters. “Everybody should know that we have no political ambitions,” Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaed Salah told state television. Salah also insisted the fight against corruption and cronyism would continue to be a priority. On 26 May, an Algerian prosecutor asked the Supreme Court to investigate two former PMs and eight former ministers for alleged corruption. Most of the politicians called out served in the cabinet just before former President Bouteflika resigned on 2 April.
