65 refugees and migrants die as boat sinks off the coast of Tunisia

According to Tunisian state-run news agency, a boat carrying 70 migrants capsized and sank 45 nautical miles off the coast of Sfax, near the Kerkennah Islands, some 270km south of Tunis. The boat, which aimed to reach the Italian coast, hat set off from Libya on the night of May 10. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) told the Tunisian news agency that those on board included Bangladeshi and Moroccan nationals. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) stated that 16 survivors were rescued by fishing boats and brought to the coast of Zarzis by the Tunisian Navy. It also claimed this was “one of the worst incidents in the Mediterranean in months.”
