EuroMeSCo Conference "Confronting Violent Extremism in the Euro-Mediterranean"

The EuroMeSCo Annual Conference “Confronting Violent Extremism in the Euro-Mediterranean” took place on 1-2 June in Barcelona. The event gathered over 150 researchers and practitioners from 22 countries to discuss violent extremism in the Euro-Mediterranean region, its manifestations, drivers, impact and what responses could be developed to confront it.

Towards a New Security Architecture in the Euro-Mediterranean

The 2016 EuroMeSCo General Assembly and Annual Conference took place at the Egmont Palace in Brussels on 13-15 April 2016. The event, co-organised with EGMONT - The Royal Institute for International Relations, gathered 150 recognised experts and policy-makers to debate the current security situation in the region and reflect on ingredients, formats, stakeholders and actions for a greater and more effective cooperation to address security challenges. The aim of the Conference was to contribute to the debate in the final stretch before the release of the EU Global Strategy.

EuroMeSCo General Assembly and Annual Conference 2015

The EuroMeSCo network held its Annual Conference and General Assembly on 8-9 of October 2015 in Milan. The event gathered over 100 participants from 27 Euro-Mediterranean countries, including policy-makers and experts from 75 research institutes on politics and security in the Mediterranean.

 

The General Assembly discussed the activities undertaken by the EuroMeSCo network in the last year, with a special focus on the new EuroMeSCo ENI Project, co-financed by the European Commission and the IEMed. It also approved the Work Plan for 2016 and the Annual Report. The General Assembly welcomed new institutes to the network, raising the total number of the EuroMeSCo members and observers to 102.

The Annual Conference "Reviewing the Euro-Mediterranean Relations” analysed the relations between the EU and the Southern Mediterranean partner countries in the changing geopolitical order. It examined the dynamics that have been determining success and failure over the past 20 years of Euro-Mediterranean relations and reflected on the future and challenges lying ahead, including internal and transnational conflicts, terrorism, migration, refugees crisis and economic and social issues. The conference addressed the current developments in three main dimensions of cooperation: politics and security, socio-economic and social, human and cultural, and reasoned on means for greater cooperation in these three areas.

EuroMeSCo General Assembly and Annual Conference 2014

The EuroMeSCo network held its Annual Conference and General Assembly on 2nd and 3rd of October 2014 in Tarragona. The event gathered more than 90 participants from 25 Euro-Mediterranean countries, including policy-makers and experts from 60 research institutes on politics and security in the Mediterranean.

The General Assembly discussed the activities undertaken by the EuroMeSCo network in the last year, including research projects, workshops, conferences and publications. It also approved the Work Plan for 2015 and the Annual Report. The General Assembly welcomed a new institute to the network, raising the total number of the EuroMeSCo members and observers to 100.

The Annual Conference “Increasing diversity in the Euro-Mediterranean region?” analysed the opportunities and challenges resulting from the growing fragmentation and diversity in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The sessions explored the role of internal and external actors in regional conflicts and in supporting democratic transitions. The experts also focused on the current state of political reforms and analysed the factors behind continuity and change of the regional political systems. They also explored the role of the EU in the Mediterranean region and put forward a series of policy recommendations to enhance the EU´s leverage and the impact of its policies.

EuroMeSCo General Assembly and Annual Conference 2013

The EuroMeSCo network held its Annual Conference and General Assembly on 3rd and 4th October 2013 in Paris. The event gathered more than 80 participants from 25 Euro-Mediterranean countries, including policy makers and experts from around 60 institutes and research centres on politics and security in the Mediterranean.

The General Assembly debated the progress made in renewing the membership of the network, keeping a steady flow of publications and research activities and facilitating the exchanges and joint projects among the members of EuroMeSCo. It also approved the Work Plan for 2014 and the Annual Report. Furthermore, the General Assembly welcomed six new members and observers of the network, raising to 99 the total number of research institutes and think tanks in the EuroMeSCo network. The minutes of the meeting will be available soon.

The Annual Conference, “A transforming Arab World: Between Continuity and Change” was co-organised with the European Union Institute for Security Studies. It aimed at analysing what has changed and what has not as a consequence of the recent developments in the Mediterranean, in three perspectives: the state, the region and the society. It also explored the impact of such changes on Euro-Mediterranean relations
