A new policy brief on the European Union and the Arab Spring written by Nathalie Tocci has just been published.

"When the dust of the Arab revolts settles, how should EU policy towards the southern Mediterranean be reframed? The lion’s share of the thinking around this question has been devoted to one of the two pillars of the EU’s Mediterranean policies: the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). Whereas the ENP deals with the bilateral dimension of the EU’s Mediterranean policy, that is, the EU’s hub-and-spoke relations with individual southern Mediterranean countries, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), building on the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP), provides the broader multilateral framework of such relations. The Arab spring has led, so far, to a rethink of the former rather than the latter."

Seminar "Political Change in Tunisia and Impacts on the Mediterranean Region"


Dates: from 24/03/2011 to 25/03/2011
Place: Tunis

The seminar will analyse the perspectives of the democratising wave started in Tunisia and continued in Egypt and Libya and the repercussions in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, not only in terms of domestic policy but also of a re-approach to Euro-Mediterranean relations and the open or latent armed conflicts in the region. Moreover, the degree of applicability in the southern Mediterranean of the different processes of transition to democracy experienced in Europe will be analysed.

Workshop "Tunisia and Egypt: Promoting Democratic Reform in the Mediterranean"
Following the recent events in the Mediterranean, particularly in Tunisia and Egypt, EuroMeSCo and IEMed are organising, in collaboration with CEPS, the workshop “Tunisia and Egypt: Promoting Democratic Reform in the Mediterranean", which will take place in Barcelona next 2 March 2011.
