EuroMeSCo Anual Conference and General Assembly 2012

Barcelona, 4-5 October 2012

The EuroMeSCo network held its Annual Conference and General Assembly on 4th and 5th October 2012 in Barcelona at the headquarters of the IEMed.

Over 7 work sessions, the network dealt with the political realities and prospects of a Euro-Mediterranean space in full transformation.
The event gathered more than 90 participants from 23 Euro-Mediterranean countries, mostly experts and representatives of around 60 of the total 93 effective member and observer institutes and research centres on politics and security in the Mediterranean.

The General Assembly approved a Declaration and its Work Plan for the periode 2012-2014. The declaration, addressed to the European institutions, underlines the need for Europe to be more present in the region, not only with financial support but also with a long-term vision and strategy to bring about a democratic future in the region. Moreover, the Assembly also expressed its will to place the EuroMeSCo network at the centre of the changing nature of Mediterranean and Euro Mediterranean politics and incorporate new research trends and institutions. In turn, the Anual Conference discuss the direction the Arab Spring is taking in the southern and eastern Mediterranean, the internal dynamics in the Arab countries and in their societies, its geostrategic consequences and the role of the EU and the Union for the Mediterranean.
