It was created in November 1989 under the format of an "Enlarged Partial Agreement" and currently has 22 member States. The aims of the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity (“the Centre”) are: • To promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law through intercultural dialogue and education, in particular among the youth of Europe and its neighboring regions; • To provide a framework for European co-operation for the purpose of increasing public awareness of global interdependence and solidarity issues; • To promote policies of solidarity in conformity with the aims and principles of the Council of Europe, by fostering dialogue and co-operation between Europe and non-European countries in neighboring regions. Areas of work Education and youth; and intercultural dialogue. Objective of the Euromed / Middle East programme Intercultural Dialogue dimension of our activities: the aim of the North-South Centre’s intercultural dialogue programme is to use dialogue to contribute to the development of familiarity, mutual understanding and ties between the different players in European and southern Mediterranean societies. The design and implementation of the NSC’s activities in this field are directly inspired by the conclusions and recommendations of the Council of Europe’s White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue, “Living together as equal in dignity”.
