General Statement

The Finnish Institute of International Affairs is a research institute whose mission is to produce high quality, topical information on international relations and the EU. The Institute realizes its aims by conducting research as well as by organizing domestic and international seminars and publishing reports on its research and current international issues. The Institute also publishes a journal, Ulkopolitiikka (Finnish Journal of Foreign Affairs), and maintains a specialized library.

The Institute was founded in 1961 on the initiative of the Paasikivi Society and until the end of 2006 remained a private state-assisted institute independent of the Government and any political party. In 2006, the tenure of the Institute was transferred from The Foundation for Foreign Policy Research to the Parliament of Finland. In conjunction with its centennial anniversary, the Parliament decided to establish an institute to conduct research on international relations and the EU. The Parliament also provides the Institute’s basic funding.

The Institute is autonomous in its research activities and is governed by a nine-member board, assisted by an advisory council and a scholarly council.

Areas of work

FIIA Has three Research Programmes:

- The European Union

- Global Security

Objectives of the Euromed/Middle East programme(s)

FIIA conducts research on the Euromed/Middle East as part of its research programmes on the European Union and on Global Security. The specific aim of its research activities in these areas is:

·- To bring discussion on the Mediterranean/Middle East to a wider Nordic audience through FIIA publications and events

·- To generate Nordic ideas on the Mediterranean/Middle East and communicate them to a wider European and international audience

·- To produce high quality academic research on contemporary Middle Eastern politics and the full breadth of Euromed policies

In light of recent events, FIIA has launched a designated research project on “The Middle East in Transition”. The project will monitor the domestic transition processes and geopolitical changes in the Middle East and their implications for the EU.
