President: Mr. Stefano Silvestri Director: Mr. Ettore Greco EuroMeSCo "liaison officer": Mr. Roberto Aliboni The Institute The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) was founded on 11 October 1965 on the initiative of Altiero Spinelli, its first director. In 1991, the Institute moved to Palazzo Rondinini, an elegant eighteenth century Baroque building in the heart of Rome, where the main activities organized by the Institute take place. A non-profit organization, the IAI is funded by individual and corporate members, public and private organizations, major international foundations, and by a standing grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Institute's main objective is to promote an understanding of the problems of international politics through studies, research, meetings and publications, with the aim of increasing the opportunities of all countries to move in the direction of supranational organization, democratic freedom and social justice (IAI Bylaws, Article 1). The Institute offers members and non-members standard and personalized services. An example of the latter is the Laboratory's Global Outlook. Research An interdisciplinary approach and policy-oriented objectives characterise the Institute's analysis of international events. The IAI strives to maintain a global perspective, evaluating Italian positions with respect to those of other international actors. To this end, the Institute has involved an increasing number of foreign researchers in its projects, and has strengthened its ties with similar institutes abroad through regular bilateral and multilateral meetings. In addition, the IAI belongs to the following international networks of research centres: the EU-CONSENT; the Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission (EuroMeSCo); the European Information Network on International Relations and Area Studies (EINIRAS); the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) and the Transatlantic Editors' Forum. Istituto Affari Internazionali is a cooperating partner of the International Relations and Security Network (ISN). Principal fields of research: 1. The European Union 2. Defence and Security 3. Laboratory of International Political Economy 4. Transatlantic Relations 5. The Mediterranean and Middle East. The Mediterranean and Middle East Programme Alongside European and Atlantic affairs, the Mediterranean and Middle East Programme has been among the first research programmes to be developed at the Institute and dates back to its foundation in 1965. The Programme reflects the perception in Italy that regions south of Europe are a factor influencing national, as well as Western security, and contributing to shape the process of European integration. The Programme pursues two main goals: - analysing political, social and economic developments in Mediterranean and Middle East countries per se and as southern dimensions of Western and European security; - establishing a network of creative and dynamic relations with the institutions and the main academic figures within the region. Projects in Progress: Transatlantic cooperation in the Mediterranean and the Middle East; European Policies towards the Mediterranean and the Middle East; Comparative Politics of the Arab World.
