General Statement The Mediterranean Institute Berlin (MIB) is an interdisciplinary social sciences research institute on the Mediterranean Area. The scientific approach of the Institute is based on the idea to link Area Studies with the discipline of International Relations, and political science with political sociology in order to contribute to the interdisciplinary dynamics in the field of social sciences. The Mediterranean Institute Berlin is affiliated to the Institute for Social Sciences (ISS) of the Humboldt University Berlin and constitutes a Research Unit within the Humboldt Center for Social and Political Research (HCSP).
Areas of work • Institute for Social Sciences: The Institute for Social Sciences, founded in 1990, is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities III of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and combines the disciplines of political science and sociology. Research focus areas include for instance comparative democracy research, comparative analysis of institutions, structures or political systems, as well as international relations or political theory.

Objectives of the Euromed/Middle East programme(s) The Institute for Social Sciences realises research as well as teaching and gathers numerous known political scientists and sociologists under its roof. The Institute has an expertise in running EU projects, as well as in managing numerous other international scientific cooperation projects (research projects, PhD programmes, Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences, Master of European Governance and Administration etc). The Institute for Social Sciences provides expertise in Euro-Mediterranean relations. Several current research projects work for instance on Euro-Turkish relations, South East Europe, borders and conflicts in Southern Europe, processes of inclusion and exclusion between Europe and its Southern neighbours. A concrete example is the research project „Mobility/Identity/Transition in the Euro-Mediterranean Area“. The objective of the Mediterranean Programme is to establish an interdisciplinary working group on the Mediterranean Area, which will focus on Euro-Mediterranean relations, foreign policies, reform and democratisation policies, migration and civil society, energy and environment.
