Erwan Lannon, Professor at Ghent University and at the College of Europe, analyses the key statements, decisions, measures and actions adopted by the European Union in response to the Arab uprisings and assesses the relevance of this response according to the expectations both in the EU and the southern Mediterranean countries. The paper concludes with a review of the major challenges for the EU in view of a changing regional and international context and outlines the main features of a future “pan-Euro-Mediterranean” region.

Turkey and the Arab Spring: Embracing "People's Power"

Gallia Lindenstrauss, Associate Researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (Israel), explores the new emphasis on Turkish foreign policy brought about by the Arab Spring and its possible ramifications for Turkey’s relations with external actors. The paper includes a brief background on both Turkish initial reactions to the Arab awakening and Turkish foreign policy under the AKP, the notion of the Turkish model and the impact of the Arab Spring on Turkish relations with various actors in the Middle East and beyond. | The EU and the Arab Spring, One Year After |
|
|
EuroMeSCo and IEMedObs jointly launch a series of new briefs to provide northern and southern Mediterranean perspectives on key aspects of current Euro-Mediterranean relations. Selected experts will provide trans-Mediterranean views on topics such as the EU response to the Arab Spring, the role of civil society in the new Mediterranean landscape, Security Sector Reform in Arab countries and the emergence of Islamist democracies in southern Mediterranean countries, among others.
