EuroMeSCo Quarterly Seminar - "Capitalising on Euro-Syrian Relations: From Tensions to Cooperation"
City of Old DamascusThe upcoming Quarterly Seminar is to be held, for the first time ever, in Damascus, on 15-17 May 2008. Addressing the current state of Euro-Syrian relations, focus will be placed on Europe’s policy perspective on the Mediterranean, the regional challenges defining relations with Syria and the cultural impact of globalisation.

This meeting is jointly organised by the EuroMeSCo Secretariat, Lisbon, the Istituto Affari Internazionali, Rome, and the Orient Centre for International Studies, Damascus, with the additional support of the Stiftung Wissenshaft und Politik, Berlin, and the Foreign Policy Institute, Ankara.
 
2nd Preparatory Meeting: "Security, Securitisation and Reform: Back to Integrative Partnership"
IAI logoIn the run-up to the EuroMeSCo Annual Conference, the EuroMeSCo Secretariat is currently organising a 2nd Preparatory Meeting, in collaboration with the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and with the support of the European Commission.

Taking place in Rome on 26-27 June, this meeting shall tackle three factors shaping the debate on the present and future situation of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership – namely security, securitization and reform. Issues to be considered include security risks in the EMP, the importance and role of securitization, and how to revive the notion of reform in Euro-Med relations.
 
1st Preparatory Meeting: "Strengthening Euro-Mediterranean Relations - Emerging Dynamics, Problems and their Potential Implications for the Maghreb"
 The EuroMeSCo Secretariat, in collaboration with the Tunisian Association des Études Internationales (AEI), and with the support of the European Commission, organised the 1st Preparatory Meeting of the EuroMeSCo Annual Conference, which this year will be hosted in Amman, in November, and consider: The EMP Between Continuity and Reinforced Cooperation. Quo Vadis Barcelona?

The meeting was held in Tunis on 21-22 April and explored Euro-Med relations, with a particular emphasis on the Maghreb region.

EuroMeSCo Research Workshop "Competition and Complementarity: National and EU Policies vis-à-vis the Mediterranean"

EuroMeSCo's latest research workshop was organised in collaboration with the Polish Institute for Public Affairs (IPA), and considered the issue of "Competition and Complementarity: National and EU Policies vis-à-vis the Southern Mediterranean". This workshop was held in Warsaw, on 31 March-1 April 2008.

Divided into four sessions, discussions analysed the foreign policies of selected EU member states and evaluated their degree of complementarity with current or emerging Euro-Mediterranean initiatives.

Quarterly Seminar “Annapolis and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Role for the EU and the EMP?”
 EuroMeSCo’s Quarterly Seminar, organised in cooperation with the Jordanian Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS), was held at the Dead Sea/Jordan on 12-13 March 2008.

This seminar brought together, in an informal setting, practitioners, researchers and other experts from within the region and Europe with the relevant expertise and insight to sustain an open and fruitful exchange of views on the impact of the November 2007 Annapolis conference on key regional issues such as territoriality, political power struggles, as well as the role of diverse participating actors, hopefully increasing confidence and mutual trust.
